Modular kitchen cost in Pune: what you're actually paying for

A modular kitchen in Pune costs ₹1.5–4 lakh for a typical 2 BHK. The spread comes from three things, and only one of them is the thing you're being sold on.

Price by layout

Kitchens are priced by running foot, which is why the layout matters more than the flat size. A U-shaped kitchen in a 2 BHK can cost more than a straight kitchen in a 3 BHK.

The part that fails, and it isn't the shutter

Here is what actually goes wrong in an Indian kitchen, roughly on schedule:

• Year 2–3: moisture gets into an unsealed edge under the sink. The board swells. The door stops sitting flush.
• Year 3–4: a cheap hinge sags. Now two doors don't line up.
• Year 5: a soft-close runner gives out on the drawer you use most.

Not one of those is the shutter — the thing every showroom conversation is about. They're the carcass, the edge banding and the hardware: the parts you cannot replace without dismantling the kitchen, and the parts that get quietly cheapened when a quote needs to come down.

The shutter is the part you can replace. The carcass is the part you can't. Spend accordingly.

What to insist on

• BWP / marine-grade ply for the carcass, not MDF, and certainly not in the sink unit.
• 2mm PVC edge banding, machine-pressed. Hand-glued banding is the single most common source of the year-three swell.
• Named hardware. Hettich or Blum, and get the name in writing — 'imported hardware' means nothing.
• A back panel. Some quotes skip it. Ask.

Why the same kitchen has two prices

Other interior companies are marketplaces: they design your kitchen and hand the making of it to a third-party fabricator. That fabricator has a margin. The platform adds its margin on top. You pay both.

It also explains the two most common complaints in this category — delays nobody owns, and materials that don't match the presentation. Both are structural. When the company selling the kitchen isn't the company building it, there's a party in the middle whose profit improves if your board gets substituted, and nobody whose name is on the date.

What we'd actually tell you

Put the money in the carcass, the banding and the hardware. Take laminate unless you have a specific reason not to. Skip the back-lit stone, the profile lights inside the wall units, and the tall unit you'll use twice a year. A kitchen that still closes properly in year eight is worth more than one that photographed well in month one.
